Maternal Labor, 2018
Graphite on paper, assorted children objects
126 x 18 inches
In collaboration with six other mothers (Sabree, Kristi Golden, Jade Gordon, Courtney Kessel, Ginny Cook and Renee Petropoulos), I assembled a list of actions performed by mothers in our role of caregivers and drew that list on a long roll of paper. Called Maternal Labor, the work details the painstaking and unending routine we go through each day caring for our children while we juggle other responsibilities and career aspirations that are often curtailed because of limitations of time or resources for childcare. The list goes on and on and ends on the word "Repeat" because our routine is recurrent at every new day. On the floor used children objects are in place of paper weights. This work looks at labor issues and highlights the often unseen and unpaid labor of women.
