Personal Protective, a physician portrait project
In collaboration with Physician Moms Group, I have created Personal Protective, a physician portrait project. The purpose of this project is to depict female-identifying physician mothers as they are, to give visibility to the sacrifices being made on behalf of our national/global public health during this time of polarization of our medical community, to create and document a visual history of our global crisis through the faces of healers. Why only women? The roles of care, not just for patients, but for kids, parents, and community, are engendered and most often fall heavily, invisibly, on women. These women embody the incommensurabilties of embodied caregiving practices in clinical and domestic spaces. To date, I have painted 70 portraits. There will be 95 in total, representing the 95 hours my sister-in-law spent in the Intensive Care Unit at NYU Bellevue hospital during 1 week in April of 2020
