More Work for Mother is the title of a book that explains how each labor saving device, such as the vacuum cleaner and washing machine, is supposed to create "less work for mother," but in fact, it creates more work, because as each labor saving device is introduced, standards of cleanliness go up. In the pandemic, as one headline read, "Other countries have a social support system, the U.S. has women." For me, that really summed it up. The burden on women, the lifelong hit to careers, and the stress, of being everything to everyone, has fallen unfairly on women in the pandemic.
